Perea's Perspective

Housing Shouldn’t Cost a Fortune 🏠

I recently met with Mia and Fabian, a young couple from Fresno who’ve been renting for years, working hard and saving every dollar they can in hopes of buying their first home. But with rent going up year after year and home prices continuing to rise, that dream is slipping further away. They’re now wondering if they’ll need to work multiple jobs just to have a shot at homeownership, something that should be achievable for every working family.

Stories like Mia and Fabian’s aren’t rare; they're a reflection of what too many families across our community are facing.

Every family deserves a safe, affordable place to call home but for far too many in the Central Valley, that’s becoming impossible.

According to the Fresno Bee, nearly 63% of renter households in Fresno are considered "rent-burdened," meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Fresno Bee

With rents rising faster than wages, families are being forced to make painful choices every month: stay in a cramped space they can barely afford, or move even farther from work and school, adding hours to their day.

Across the Valley, families are being priced out of neighborhoods they’ve lived in for generations. As a city planner and someone who’s spent her career building communities that are safe, walkable, and affordable, I know the solution is clear: we need more homes. Not just any homes, but affordable homes so families can live, work, and thrive here.

During my time on Fresno City Council, I worked to:

But there’s more to do. Families need leaders in Sacramento who will fight to:

  • Build more housing so every family can afford to live where they work

  • Preserve neighborhoods and prevent displacement

  • Ensure new development is safe, sustainable, and affordable

This campaign is about making housing affordable for everyone in the Central Valley. With your support, we can make sure no one has to choose between a roof over their head and making ends meet.

Together, we can build communities where hard working Californians can put down roots and dreams don’t have to wait.

I’d be honored to have you join me in this fight for our community’s future.
